Sacrament of Reconciliation

9 September 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

A time for preparing our children to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation is approaching. When parents present a child for baptism they commit to being the first educators of their child in the Catholic faith.  Thus, parents have the primary responsibility for preparing their child for First Reconciliation, and at a later time for Confirmation and First Holy Communion. Parents who have experienced preparing their children for the sacraments describe this opportunity as a privilege and a joy. Age seven, or Grade 2 is generally seen as the age of reason when a child can prepare for the Sacrament, but you as parents can make the judgement as to your child’s readiness.

At St Therese’s Parish, Sr Margaret Henderson and her team will assist parents to prepare their children. Together, she and the parents will guide the children through times of structured learning, opportunities for reflection and discussion, and moments of prayer.

With this letter, I warmly invite you and your child to take part in preparing to celebrate First Reconciliation. An introductory session for parents and carers will be held at St Therese’s Catholic School Hall, 24 Hopkins Street, Moonah, on Tuesday 20th October at 7:00 pm. During this introductory session, you will be equipped in ways to help form your kids on this journey. We will outline the process of preparing for First Reconciliation, answer your questions, and provide the opportunity for you to enrol your child. Please bring your child’s Certificate of Baptism, a copy of which can be obtained from the parish of baptism if you do not have the original. There will be a small cost of about fifteen dollars for materials.

Following the introductory session there will be three preparation sessions for you and your children.

Sunday 25th October: Presentation of candidates at 9.00 am Mass, followed by the 1st workshop at approximately 10.15am till 11.15 am in the School Hall.

Sunday 15th November: 9.00 am Mass, followed by the 2nd workshop 10.15 -11.15 am.

Sunday 29th November: 9:00 am Mass followed by the 3rd workshop 10.15 -11.15 am.

First Reconciliation will be celebrated in the church on Wednesday 2nd December at 6.30 pm.

I hope you will accept this invitation to participate in preparing your child to celebrate First Reconciliation. Please feel welcome to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

To register your child please click on the following link and bring the form along on Tuesday 20th October at 7:00pm. Registration Form First Reconciliation 2020.pdf
